An origin story built in the small-town world of the Midwest is all too common, but one built with the smart pacing of a favorite film and the emotional pull of a desert-island record forgives all cliches. For James Shotwell, humble beginnings in southwest Michigan via Ohio soon morphed into a lifelong passion for punk-minded music and its vibrant intersections with storytelling and sheer energy. Shortly before graduating from Ferris State University with a Bachelor's Degree in Music Industry Management, James founded the pop-culture website Under the Gun Review at age 20 and served as its Editor-in-Chief until 2015. In tandem with this self-made pursuit, a montage of a decade of music moments unfolded. Bylines and photo credits began to stack up at Shotwell's heroic contemporaries Rolling Stone and Alternative Press. On the road, Shotwell was a tour/stage manager for Vans Warped Tour in 2013, a repeat industry coach at SXSW and LAUNCH Music Conference, and co-owner and operator of Antique Records, a vinyl and cassette label anchored in downtown Boston until its closure. James currently has a home at Haulix, one of digital music's most valiant fighters against music piracy, where he serves as marketing coordinator and host of the Minneapolis startup's Inside Music Podcast.

James' love of film has filled out the second act of this Shotwell's story. As the Managing Editor for Substream Magazine, five years of film writing begun while at Under the Gun have earned an extra boost. Shotwell's critiques have been quoted in trailers and international marketing efforts for several films, proving that he is to be as trusted as he is to be incredibly motivated.

Let James show you what he can do for your band, brand, or cinematic land.
